Aboard: Le Lyrial

This extended expedition cruise take you from Ushuaia, in Tierra del Fuego, the southernmost city in the world, to Cape Town in South Africa. Included on the voyage are the Falkland Islands and the South Georgia, a sub-Antarctic region formed by a chain of underwater mountains and home to rich and fascinating wildlife including king penguins, whales, elephant seals, and fur seals. Then on to three of the most isolated islands in the world: Tristan da Cunha, a volcanic and mountainous land remarkable for its 2,000 metre peak; Nightingale, home to rockhoppers and Gough Island, with one of the world’s largest seabird colonies and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Today, we plan to land at Grave Cove and New Island in the West Falklands. Here, amongst the rugged and beautiful scenery, you will have the opportunity to get close up with several species of penguin, black-browed albatross, petrels and other land and sea birds as well as colonies of fur seals.

Salisbury Plain, Stromness and Fortuna Bay

We hope to disembark at the splendid Fortuna Bay among the penguins and be allowed to approach the sea elephants lounging in the weak southern sunshine. This glacial expanse of Salisbury Plain, surrounded by high mountains is home to over 250,000 king penguins and the spectacle is truly amazing.

Grytviken & St Andrew's Bay

Grytviken & St Andrew's Bay

At Grytviken, we disembarkand spend time looking at the ruins of this historic whaling station. Here, we will also pay our respects at the grave of the famous explorer, Ernest Shackleton and visit the museum, from where you can also send postcards homefrom one of the most remote places on earth.

Facing out towards the tempestuous Atlantic Ocean, you'll safely disembark along Saint Andrews Bay with the assistance of your naturalist guides. This bay bears a gift that is sure to enchant photographers. From the bay's long grey-sand beach, home to abundant fur seals and elephant seals, you can easily access a vast glacial trough bordered by steep mountainsides and enclosed by Ross Glacier. Here, at the heart of this valley, lies the climax of your visit: the largest colony of king penguins on the South Georgia Islands. You'll be witness to a surreal visual and auditory experience: entire hillsides covered with adult penguins dutifully going back and forth from land to water in order to feed their young.

Gold Harbour and Cooper Bay

Gold Harbor is home to not only king and gentoo penguins but also a large colony of elephant seals - walking amongst these leviathans is an amazing experience. This is also a great place for seein the beautiful light-mantled sooty albatross.

Cooper Bay is home to a large colony of macaroni penguins, distinctive because of their floppy bright yellow crests.

Relax during these days at sea and enjoy the facilities on board ship. Spend time on deck watching for whales and seabirds.

Tristan Da Cunha

Tristan Da Cunha

One of the most remote settlements in the world. If we can land here, we can spend time exploring the town, Edinburgh-of-the-Seven Seas, climb the volcano and perhaps enjoy a drink in the world's furthermost pub. Look out for the endemic Tristan thrush and albatross.

Nightingale Island

Nightingale Island

Nightingale is one of the three main islands in the Tristan group and is home to a large colony of rockhopper penguins. We may be able to land here dependent on sea conditions.

Gough Island

Gough Island

Gough Island is a protected UNESCO reserve and no landings are permitted. We will take a close up cruise around the isalnd looking at the thousands of sea birds nesting on and swooping around the cliffs.

Our last days at sea spent relaxing and looking for marine mammals and different birds as we approach African shores.

Cape Town

Arrive and spend a day enjoying the sights and sounds of this cosmopolitan city, set in the beautiful surroundings of Table Bay. Disembark and transfer to airport or hotel.
