This expedition is ideal for those who prefer not to experience the sea crossing of the Drake Passage or those who have time constraints. Departure is by air from Punta Arenas in Chile to King George Island in the South Shetlands and return, with a classic Antarctic Peninsula expedition in between. Optional kayaking and snowshoeing/hiking available.

Punta Arenas

Punta Arenas

Arrival at the city of Punta Arenas where you will be met to be transferred to the hotel. Afternoon briefing on your forthcoming expedition including guidelines for visitors to Antarctica and Zodiac procedures.Later, you will be invited to gather for a welcome dinner together with your fellow expeditioners and you will have the chance to enjoy a typical Magellan menu. Overnight accommodation in hotel. You may also choose to arrive in Punta Arenas, the gateway to Patagonia, earlier and visit the nearby countryside and national park.

King George island
2Day

King George island

Our Antarctic adventure will begin with the two hour flight from Punta Arenas to King George Island (South Shetland Islands). Upon arrival, we will tour around the area where the Frei Chilean Base and the Bellingshausen Russian Base are located. We will gather at the beach on Fildes Bay for embarkation by Zodiac to our expedition vessel.

Antarctic Peninsula
3 - 6Days

Antarctic Peninsula

While cruising between the South Shetland Islands and the western coast of the Antarctic Peninsula, sailing along ice-filled fjords and between spectacular icebergs, we will enjoy the company of sea birds, penguins, seals and whales. Our journey southwards will include visits to some of the most magnificent spots in the white continent, such as: Livingston Island, Port Lockroy, Petermann Island, Paradise Bay, Cuverville and Deception Islands amongst others. Our target will be the crossing of the Lemaire Channel and latitude 65 South. Dependent on ice/sea/weather conditions, our adventure will be very active, with several daily landings and cruises in Zodiacs, with evening lectures and social time.

King George Island

Return to King George Island where we will disembark in Zodiacs at the Frei Chilean Base and head to the aerodrome to take the flight back to Punta Arenas. Transfer to hotel for overnight.

Mid range vessel

M/V Ocean Nova

The Ocean Nova was built in Denmark in 1992 and refurbished in 2006. It has a fully classified ice-strengthened hull, so is ideally suited for polar waters. There is a total of 45 cabins, all with windows and en-suite facilities. These include single, twin and triple berth cabins. Public areas include two dining rooms, observation lounge/presentation lounge, bar, library, exercise room and hospital. There is plenty of deck space for scenery and wildlife viewing. There is an open bridge policy.
