This expedition is ideal for those who prefer not to experience the sea crossing of the Drake Passage or those who have time constraints. Departure is by air from Punta Arenas in Chile to King George Island in the South Shetlands and return, with a classic Antarctic Peninsula expedition in between. Optional kayaking and snowshoeing/hiking available.

Punta Arenas

Punta Arenas

Arrival at the city of Punta Arenas where you will be met to be transferred to the hotel. Afternoon briefing on your forthcoming expedition including guidelines for visitors to Antarctica and Zodiac procedures.Later, you will be invited to gather for a welcome dinner together with your fellow expeditioners and you will have the chance to enjoy a typical Magellan menu. Overnight accommodation in hotel. You may also choose to arrive in Punta Arenas, the gateway to Patagonia, earlier and visit the nearby countryside and national park.

King George island
2Day

King George island

Our Antarctic adventure will begin with the two hour flight from Punta Arenas to King George Island (South Shetland Islands). Upon arrival, we will tour around the area where the Frei Chilean Base and the Bellingshausen Russian Base are located. We will gather at the beach on Fildes Bay for embarkation by Zodiac to our expedition vessel.

Antarctic Peninsula

Cruise between the South Shetland Islands and the western coast of the Antarctic Peninsula, sailing along ice-filled fjords and among spectacular icebergs, while enjoying the company of seabirds, penguins, seals and whales. Each day, disembark by Zodiac and explore the landscape together with expert polar guides. On board the ship, attend an engaging program of lectures and presentations, and enjoy spectacular views from the lounge while sharing your daily adventures with fellow guests.

No journey is the same as flexibility is the key to success in Antarctica. The Expedition Team sets the voyage route to take advantage of the ever-changing opportunities provided by Nature, crafting a unique and extraordinary experience each time. While the exact itinerary changes with each expedition, you will explore several spots that offer the best possible overview of the varied Antarctic environment. Your voyage may include visits to sites such as Paulet Island, Hope Bay, Port Lockroy, Petermann Island, Paradise Bay, Deception Island, the Lemaire Channel, or many other magnificent places.

Return to King George Island where we will disembark in Zodiacs at the Frei Chilean Base and head to the aerodrome to take the flight back to Punta Arenas. Transfer to hotel for overnight.

M/V Ocean Nova

The Ocean Nova was built in Denmark in 1992 and refurbished in 2006. It has a fully classified ice-strengthened hull, so is ideally suited for polar waters. There is a total of 45 cabins, all with windows and en-suite facilities. These include single, twin and triple berth cabins. Public areas include two dining rooms, observation lounge/presentation lounge, bar, library, exercise room and hospital. There is plenty of deck space for scenery and wildlife viewing. There is an open bridge policy.
