This unique voyage will bring you to experience the most staggering wildlife show on earth, on the remote and spectacularly scenic island of South Georgia. A firm favourite on any Antarctic region exploration, South Georgia is quite simply a wildlife enthusiast’s paradise. This special voyage will focus solely on discovering everything that makes this incredible destination so enchanting, from the millions of penguins to the beautiful snow-capped mountains.

This itinerary has been timed to coincide with the arrival of spring in the sub-Antarctic region, allowing you to witness the beginning of the wildlife migration and the commencement of the breeding cycle for many species. Observing as the huge elephant seals, countless seals and millions of penguins and other birdlife tussle for space on the beaches you may well believe you are on the set of your very own wildlife documentary. This fascinating trip will also give us a great insight into the historical expeditions of the renowned explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton and the special connection he has to this island. An additional highlight will be the onboard photography symposium which will be open to all guests. A team of expert photographers, along with your regular team of expert historians, geologists and wildlife specialists, will help you to master your photography skills and create the perfect images of your trip. With such an abundance of wildlife and spectacular scenery you certainly won’t be short of subjects!

Renowned as one of the finest wildlife destinations on the planet, the draw of South Georgia is simply indescribable. So why not come and see for yourself why this remote and uninhabited place is so beloved!

Please note: This itinerary requires a charter flight from Stanley to Santiago at a cost of US$495. This special flight is exclusive to guests on this fantastic voyage and will allow you to get a taste of the Falkland Islands after your exploration of South Georgia.

Ushuaia
1Day

Ushuaia

Your adventure will begin in Ushuaia, South America’s southernmost city, where after having arrived independently you will make your way to the central meeting point to join the transfer to the port to board your expedition vessel in the afternoon. After settling into your comfortable cabin and familiarising yourself with your new surroundings you can enjoy a welcome cocktail and dinner as we set sail for the journey to South Georgia.

At sea
2 - 4Days

At sea

Over the course of the next three days we will enjoy a relaxing sail towards South Georgia. We recommend spending some time on deck looking out for the various seabirds that are likely to be following the ship along with possibly whales in the waters below. This will be a great time to brush up on your wildlife photography skills, with your resident photography expert on hand to provide you with hints and tips for perfecting your technique.

You can also enjoy the commencement of your lecture and presentation programme delivered by onboard experts covering everything from Sub-Antarctic wildlife and geology to historical polar explorations including those of Sir Ernest Shackelton. There will also be bio-environmental briefings for your time on South Georgia, including important information on behaviour around the abundant wildlife.

South Georgia - King Haakon Bay & Northwest Coast
5 - 6Days

South Georgia - King Haakon Bay & Northwest Coast

Today you will arrive in the wilderness wildlife paradise of South Georgia, one of the most wildlife-rich and scenically beautiful places in the world. You will now enjoy seven full days of in-depth exploration of this remarkable place, taking Zodiac cruises, shore walks and hikes and getting up-close to the abundant wildlife that helps to make this island so special. As well as being remarkably wildlife-rich, South Georgia is also an exceptionally historically-rich area and we will get our first taste of this as we make land for the first time to visit historic King Haakon Bay. Surrounded by majestic snow-capped mountains, this is the spot where Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men made landfall in their small lifeboat after completing the perilous ocean crossing from Elephant Island over a century ago. This often windswept area is rarely visited owing to its somewhat formidable weather conditions, but this voyage has been timed to allow us to visit and learn more about Shackleton and his fate.

Moving along to the more protected areas of the northeast coast we will enjoy thrilling Zodiac cruises and land visits, in and out of scenic bays, searching for the abundant wildlife everywhere we go. Known as the ‘Serengeti of the Southern Ocean’, it won’t take long to discover why as we launch the Zodiacs to visit Elsehul Bay and the indescribable Salisbury Plain, whose tussock covered dunes and black sand beaches are home to staggering numbers (at least 100,000) of king penguins. Just one of several rookeries on the island, each as impressive as the other, South Georgia is thought to have more wildlife per square foot than any other place on the planet. Yet it’s not only penguins that reside here. Fur seals and enormous elephant seals lazing on the beaches will be seen in huge numbers, and the numbers of birds including giant petrels, skuas and the formidable albatross are thought to be in the tens of millions.

Fortuna Bay, Stromness & Grytviken
7 - 8Days

Fortuna Bay, Stromness & Grytviken

Moving further along the east coast our next visit will take us to the majestic three-mile long fjord of Fortuna Bay where we will enjoy some excellent exploration. As well as the bountiful wildlife and splendid landscapes, South Georgia is an important destination for history enthusiasts, being the ending point of the epic survival and rescue mission of Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men back in the 1910’s. Back in 1916, Shackleton and his companions Worsley and Crean made a heroic hike across the island from King Haakon Bay to Stromness, and if conditions allow we will attempt to hike in their footsteps for the last few miles across the saddle between Fortuna Bay and Stromness. Your accompanying expert historians will offer you an insight into these hardy men’s journey and you will have the opportunity to visit Grytviken to pay your respects at the final resting place of this legendary explorer. In Grytviken you will also be able to visit the excellent museum, the beautifully restored church and the sites of abandoned whaling stations which offer a fascinating glimpse into South Georgia’s past.

St Andrews Bay & Gold Harbour
9 - 10Days

St Andrews Bay & Gold Harbour

More unforgettable wildlife encounters await as we visit the scenic areas of Gold Harbour and St Andrew’s Bay where we can explore on foot to get up-close to abundant fur seals and elephant seals and more massive colonies of king penguins. Photography enthusiasts will be in their element here as the incredibly picturesque Drygalski Fjord provides the ultimate backdrop for the teeming wildlife populations surrounding it. So-called for its cliffs which appear yellow in the morning and evening, Gold Harbour will be another spot for fantastic photo opportunities and your accompanying photography experts will be happy to share hints and tips for capturing the perfect images.

Godthul & Prion Island
11Day

Godthul & Prion Island

Having reached our most southern point on the island we will now return north back up the east coast to visit some more enchanting landing sites and continue our in-depth exploration. Our next stop is likely to be the old whaling depot at Godthul where we can enjoy a fantastic hike up to a picturesque lake before making our way Prion Island. This rarely-visited location is thought to be a jewel in the South Georgia crown and has been designated as a ‘Special Protected Area’ owing to the outstanding numbers of breeding wandering albatross colonies here. Due to the high concentration of fur seals on the beaches here the island is closed to visitors between late November and early January, but this tour has been timed perfectly to allow us to take a walk across the boardwalks to the observation platforms to view these majestic birds in close proximity. With the largest wingspan of any living bird, the albatross’ wingspan can measure up to 11foot wide, witnessing these remarkable animals take flight will be a simply unforgettable sight.

On the evening of day 10 we will sadly bid farewell to South Georgia and begin our sail back towards the Falkland Islands.

At Sea towards The Falklands
12 - 15Days

At Sea towards The Falklands

Leaving the wonders of unforgettable South Georgia behind, we will now make our way to the equally beautiful Falkland Islands for the commencement of your voyage. By now your cameras will surely be bursting with wildlife and scenery photos, and your onboard photography expert will be happy to help you with tips on editing your images and making the most of them.

Your lecture programme will continue, and this is also an excellent time to simply relax in the comfort of your ship after what will have been an exciting couple of weeks. On the evening of day 15 you will be invited to join the captain for a special farewell dinner to commemorate our very special expedition.

Stanley to Santiago
16Day

Stanley to Santiago

Arrival into the port in Stanley, the capital of the Falklands, will signal the end of our voyage and after disembarkation it will be time to bid farewell to the crew and enjoy some time to explore around Stanley before the transfer to the airport for your charter flight to Santiago. Upon arrival in Santiago a transfer will be provided to a downtown location should you wish to extend your stay in South America. Various extension tours are available, and we would be delighted to help you decide should this be of interest to you.

Please note: this flight is not included in your cruise package and costs $495 pp.

Superlatives abound – a truly amazing experience...awesome. Thanks to all for making it such a memorable experience.
We had the time of our lives on board ship...if anybody wants to go to Antarctica, we will certainly advise to go with you.
Huge congratulations to you and all the team for the perfect organisation throughout the trip. From the early planning to the last transfer, everything went without a hitch.
Now that I am back from my odyssey voyage, I thought I would let you know that after all that planning it really did exceed my expectations – we managed landings everywhere even on Tristan da Cuhna and had great bird sightings. The guides all knew what they were talking about too and made sure I got some great photos – still sorting them all out! Thanks for everything and see you at Birdfair!
I came to Wildfoot because a friend had booked with you when you were Antarctica Bound and they were right. Everything went perfectly, even when our flight was cancelled, you made sure we still made it to the ship with time to spare. L’Austral is a beautiful ship with first class service and food and the guides looked after us well. Very happy to recommend Wildfoot and L’Austral...
The adventure really was a 'trip of a lifetime' and we are so glad we tagged an extra day in Buenos Aires at either end and that we went Premium Economy, it made all the difference. The ship Sea Explorer was exactly as Simon had described and was very comfortable. South Georgia was the highlight but we were surprised how much wildlife there was to see on the Falklands and we might well book one of your nature trips to the Falklands in the future.
I want to thank you for all you did to make my recent Falklands trip run so smoothly and comfortably. Thank you for all your help over the diet too.
• I wanted to send you a quick thank you email. We had a fantastic trip, the boat, staff, scenery, itinerary, and pretty much everything else was incredible! Thank you so much for arranging the cabin upgrade, we were delighted to have our own room! We had a really brilliant time, and wanted to say thanks so much for being so helpful throughout, we're lucky to have found you.
We had a very special experience organized by you in Feb, especially the wedding in Antarctica and our stay in Patagonia. Thank you.
Many thanks for all you help with our polar trip which exceeded all expectations. We will certainly recommend your company and seriously consider yourselves for future trips.
I just want to thank you for all your help with my Ross Sea trip. It was really the trip of a lifetime & the ship & crew were excellent.
Overall I think that it was an excellent trip that was well worth the price paid and I would have no hesitation recommending your company to others.
I'm sure you get plenty of compliments, but I just want to follow up telling you what a great time we had on the MS Expedition Antarctica Classic cruise. We were very pleased with all of the staff, on the ground and on the ship. Everyone was so friendly and knowledgeable. We greatly appreciated their experience and expertise. Their very careful attention to all of the environmental rules and precautions should also be lauded. Thank you for all of your service and attention. If we're planning on one of the other regions that you serve, we'll definitely be in touch!!
We would like to thank you with all our heart for our fabulous trip. It was amazing. Everything was perfect. I recommend Antarctica and South America to everybody. Doing business with you was also a great experience. You are the best travel agent I ever met. I hope to have the chance to do business with you again in the future.
We've just got back from out trip to Patagonia and the Antarctic and want to say a big thank you to all of you at Wildfoot but specifically you, Tina and Sara, for organising our trip and sorting out all my queries before we went. You've all been thoroughly professional - and friendly with it. I always get concerned that hotels won't have received the booking, the air e-tickets won't be recognised or luggage ends up somewhere other that where we are, but I didn't need to worry as everything was well planned in advance and the various elements, air travel, two cruises, hotels etc, fitted seamlessly. You can take this as a 10 out of 10 satisfaction rating and recommendation for your company. You will certainly be my 'go to' provider if we ever do anything similar in the future. Thanks once again for our trip of a lifetime.
I just wanted to say an enormous thank you for your help with my trip. It was the best two weeks of my life! MS Expedition was amazing – their itinerary, their crew, their spirit. It was truly exceptional. One of the best things was how they arranged the rooms, I just had the best roommates and that really made a big difference to the trip. We got to see some fast ice and got out to walk on it – literally walking on the frozen sea. Amazing! I am saving for my next trip and I would not dream of going with anyone but you guys again. Good work! A dream very much come true.
I hope you’re well. I wanted to drop you a line to say we are back from Antarctica and had a wonderful time with Ponant. The trip exceeded our expectations in every respect, and I haven’t yet found enough superlatives to describe it to friends! Antarctica was breathtaking (as you know), and we loved pretty-much everything about Ponant. It was the perfect fit for us and I’m very grateful to you for taking the time to help with the booking. Having read the nightmares that Silversea have been having with the Silver Cloud, we felt lucky to be onboard Le Lyrial. Of course the only downside of a trip like this is we want to go back - best start saving now! Thanks again for all of your help and support with the booking process. Ponant was exactly as you described it. We have our eye on a couple of other cruises with them so I might be in touch soon.
Just a quick note to express my sincere thanks to you and all your staff for making this an epic adventure of immense proportions. Everything went smoothly, pickups, hotels and most of all the expedition itself. Truly a mind blowing experience unlike any I have ever taken.
We had the most fantastic time! Everything exceeded our expectations - the ship, the expedition team, the scenery and the most amazing wildlife experiences - 15 humpback whales around the ship one sunset was particularly stunning. Thank you so much to you and your colleagues for your expert advice (the cabin choice was just perfect, especially for the bumpy days!) and guidance and helping made this experience so great. My lifetime's ambition was to visit Antarctica and you all helped make that possible. I should also say that the arrangements in Buenos Aires worked really well too. I think we all have ideas about the next trip - Svalbard or the NorthWest Passage - but maybe in a couple of years, although we do each have $1500 in vouchers from Quark! I am not on Facebook myself but will try to put a review on either of the links below. I've received the new brochure already.
A great big thanks to all at Wildfoot Travel for making my Antarcti Expediton an epic adventure of immense proportions. Everything went smoothly, pickups, hotels and most of all the expedition itself. A truly mind blowing experience unlike any I have ever taken. Looking forward to the next trip with you.
Just came back from a trip aboard the Ortelius to the Falklands, South Georgia and Antarctica. Thank you Wildfoot for organising it so well. We had the trip of a lifetime and everything ran very smoothly and stress free so many, many thanks
I travelled to the Antarctica Circle with Wildfoot. It was a memorable trip. The MS Expedition was definately the right choice. The ship is very nice, very comfortable, very clean, the crew is fantastic, the meals were very good, the expedition staff very kind and extremely knowledgeable and professional. All activities were very well and timely organized in a safety manner. Besides that, despite haveing had a rough sea on the Drake on way in, we were quite lucky with the weather (we got some cloudy days but also snow, bright sunshine and beautiful sunsets,) making every landing a wonderful happening. All in all, it was less than perfect.
