Aboard: Sea Spirit

This fantastic itinerary offers the unique chance to enjoy an unforgettable exploration of the natural wonders of the beautiful Falkland Islands, the wildlife paradise of South Georgia and the unforgettable white continent of Antarctica. Combining a 7-night land-based stay in the Falkands with a 16-night expedition cruise to South Georgia & Antarctica offers you the best of both worlds in terms of in-depth exploration in this fascinating part of the world.

The Falkland Islands portion of your tour will see you stay in authentic accommodation in the remote and wonderful locations of Pebble Island and Sea Lion Island, and the charming capital of Stanley. Your accommodation hosts will offer insight and guidance towards the best wildlife hotspots and the most awe-inspiring scenic areas. Throughout your time here you will hope to spot a large variety of birds and other species close up; birds such as nesting black-browed albatross, five species of penguin, giant petrels, the endangered striated caracara and endemics such as Cobb's wren and the Falklands flightless steamer duck. On the beaches or offshore are elephant and fur seals, two species of dolphin and orca.

You will then set sail aboard the luxury expedition vessel M/V Sea Spirit to enjoy an in-depth exploration of South Georgia, an island bursting with scenic wonders, historical sites and millions of penguins! South Georgia really is somewhere that needs to be seen to believed. Beaches bustling with thousands upon thousands of penguins jostling for space with huge elephant seals, abandoned whaling stations, spectacular fjords and the final resting place of the legendary explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, all framed by a backdrop of breathtaking mountain scenery!

Then it’s time for the ultimate once-in-a-lifetime adventure as your ship heads towards the majestic wonders of Antarctica where you can enjoy thrilling Zodiac cruises and land excursions designed to showcase the incredible natural wonders of this enigmatic area at the bottom of the world.

This is a one-off combination itinerary so space is very limited.

The price quoted is for a Twin share room on the Falkland Islands and a Twin share cabin aboard the Sea Spirit. However, if you prefer a Single room on the Falklands you can request one for an additional fee. Other room configurations may also be available upon request.

Santiago to Stanley / Transfer to Pebble Island

Your Falklands, South Georgia & Antarctica itinerary will begin in the Chilean capital of Santiago where having arrived independently you will take your included flight to Mount Pleasant in the Falkland Islands. Upon arrival at Mount Pleasant you will transfer via internal FIGAS flight to the wonderful Pebble Island. Named for the brightly coloured pebbles which adorn the island’s beautiful beaches, the origins of which remain a mystery, Pebble Island is the third largest of the offshore islands of the archipelago.

After arriving on Pebble Island and checking into your comfortable guest house, there may be time for a quick orientation tour around the island before settling down for your first dinner at the lodge.

3 nights accommodation at Pebble Lodge on a full board basis.

Pebble Island
2 - 3Days

Pebble Island

You will now spend the next 2 full days seeking out the best wildlife and scenery opportunities on the island. The lodge will offer and provide wildlife, history and scenery tours.

Home to the largest sand beach in the Falklands, Pebble Island’s pretty landscape features mountain peaks and many large lakes and ponds which attract a wide range of wildfowl and wading birds. The island qualifies as an Important Bird Area and during your time here you will travel all around in the island in search, not only of exceptional scenic opportunities, but also of wildlife encounters. Around 40 birds species have been recorded on the island including over 1,000 pairs of Imperial cormorants as well as several large colonies of Gentoo, Megellanic and Southern Rockhopper penguins. There are also good chances of spotting Commerson’s dolphins and the Queen of the Falklands fritillary butterfly which are regularly recorded here.

Sea Lion Island
4 - 5Days

Sea Lion Island

This morning you will take an internal flight to Sea Lion Island where you will check into the Sea Lion Lodge for your 2 night stay. Sea Lion Island lies 17km south of mainland East Falkland and is the premier wildlife tourism site in the archipelago. As its name suggests, you can expect to see a number of sea lions hauled out on the shore, and the island is also home to 95% of the Falklands’ southern elephant seal population. You will be visiting during Killer whale season so you may be able to tick these off your bucket list of wildlife viewing experiences too. As well as marine wildlife, as with the majority of the Falkland Islands there are also excellent bird watching opportunities, with the island being home to Gentoo, Magellanic and Southern rockhopper penguins, along with an abundance of ground-nesting birds.

2 nights’ accommodation at Sea Lion Lodge on a full board basis.

Stanley
6 - 7Days

Stanley

On day 6 you will take another internal flight to Stanley and check in to the welcoming Malvina House Hotel. Stanley is a charming town which looks very much like a traditional English village, and is a place of great historical interest. There is a harbour, cathedral and a number of welcoming British-style pubs. There is also the fantastic Falkland Islands Museum. Make sure to take some time at leisure to explore through the colourful streets. Lots of birds can be seen within the town and along the waterfront area including geese, ducks, petrels and penguins.

Stanley - Embark Sea Spirit

On day 8, the second portion of your exciting itinerary begins as you make your way to the port to board the fantastic M/V Sea Spirit expedition ship. Now that I am back from my odyssey voyage, I thought I would let you know that after all that planning it really did exceed my expectations – we managed landings everywhere even on Tristan da Cuhna and had great bird sightings. The guides all knew what they were talking about too and made sure I got some great photos – still sorting them all out! Thanks for everything and see you at Birdfair!

Overall I think that it was an excellent trip that was well worth the price paid and I would have no hesitation recommending your company to others.
