Doini Island & Cape Nelson, Tufi Harbour
3 - 4Days

Doini Island & Cape Nelson, Tufi Harbour

Our first adventure brings us to Papua New Guinea’s eastern coast where we will anchor within the tropical waters of Milne Bay to find the peaceful and seldom-visited Doini Island. Fringed by white sand beaches and rich coral reefs, the island offers a blend of natural beauty and cultural intrigue. Take your first snorkelling excursion in the clear waters alive with marine life, or venture inland to discover WWII relics and the traditional Skull Cave, an ancient burial site holding the remains of tribal warriors. With its small population and unspoiled landscapes, Doini Island offers a unique and authentic glimpse into the region’s past and present.

The following day we will explore the breathtaking Tufi Fjords, a rarely visited natural wonder made up of 25 deep volcanic canyons carved into the coastline. These are the only fjords in Papua New Guinea, offering dramatic basalt cliffs and tranquil, protected waters. We’ll cruise through the fjords before heading ashore by Zodiac to meet local communities and learn about the rich cultural traditions of the Tufi people. The sheltered reefs here are teeming with marine life, providing excellent snorkelling conditions with vibrant corals and the chance to spot species like Gobies, Mandarin Fish, and Pygmy Seahorses. Among the anticipated highlights today is the exploration of the island's geothermal region, characterised by hot springs and bubbling mud pools enveloped by lush vegetation. You will have the opportunity to snorkel nearby amid a myriad of colourful coral and fish, all drawn by the underwater hot springs that emanate from small vents on the ocean floor, creating a mesmerising display of bubbles rising to the surface. This underwater world has been likened to "swimming in champagne" due to its astonishing clarity, and the marine life here is renowned for its abundance, as well as the awe-inspiring sizes that the coral formations attain. Additionally, our plans include a visit to Dobu Island, a diminutive but culturally significant island that plays a pivotal role in the Kula Ring, a renowned cultural exchange system extensively studied and described by the anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski.

Meanwhile, a plethora of other remarkable species call this island and its surrounding waters home, such as the elusive dugong, the world's largest skink, the endemic Tetepare White-eye, and numerous others.

A standout feature of our journey will be this afternoon's exploration and snorkelling excursion in Marovo Lagoon, renowned as the largest saltwater lagoon on the planet. Whether above or beneath the water's surface, Marovo Lagoon is nothing short of breathtaking.
