Hidden within the Tuamotu Archipelago, Makatea, whose name comes from the Polynesian words for “rock” (maka) and “white” (tea), is a striking raised coral atoll unlike any other in French Polynesia. Part of the Palliser group, this remote island sits about 75 kms north of Tikehau and 200 kms northeast of Tahiti. Remote and radiant, Rangiroa, meaning “vast sky” in Polynesian, is the largest atoll in French Polynesia, a seemingly endless circle of shimmering blues and soft sands that shift from white to delicate pink. Described by Jacques Cousteau as one of the world’s most extraordinary diving destinations, Rangiroa’s true splendour lies beneath the surface, where coral gardens burst with colour and marine life thrives in abundance. This former island capital is framed by a lush valley draped in tropical forest on one side and a serene bay of crystalline waters on the other, making it a haven for nature lovers and seekers of quiet authenticity. Towering basalt pinnacles frame this peaceful settlement, creating one of the most dramatic landscapes in Polynesia. In ancient times, islanders built their homes deep within the valleys to protect against tsunamis and rival clans, leaving behind a wealth of archaeological treasures still beautifully preserved today. Explore the ceremonial plazas, or tohua, of Kamuihei and Hikokua, where traditional houses have been carefully reconstructed, offering a vivid glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the Marquesas.

Nearby, the sacred site of Piki Vehine reveals ancient tiki statues, silent witnesses to the island’s spiritual past. Before you leave, visit the remarkable Notre Dame des Marquises Cathedral, uniquely built from stones gathered across all six of the Marquesas Islands, a beautiful symbol of unity and craftsmanship.

Today you’ll discover two unforgettable destinations on the remote and breathtaking island of Fatu Hiva, the most southerly of the Marquesas Islands. Your morning begins in Omoa, a tranquil fishing village tucked into a magnificent bay, where time seems to have paused. In the surrounding valley, remnants of the island’s past including ancient tohua (ceremonial plazas) and burial caves hidden within the lush forest whisper stories of long ago. Visit the Maison Grelet, a small museum showcasing exquisite wood carvings and local artistry, and watch village craftspeople demonstrate the traditional making of tapa (bark cloth) and umu hei, fragrant bouquets blending flowers, herbs, and island scents.

In the afternoon, sail to the world-renowned Hanavave Bay, often hailed as one of the most beautiful bays on Earth. Towering volcanic cliffs plunge into deep blue waters, framing a landscape of raw, dramatic beauty. Stroll through the peaceful village, where the air hums with ukulele melodies and the warm laughter of locals. Here, artisans proudly share their tapa creations and offer you the island’s sweet, sun-ripened citrus fruits.

Hapatoni, Tahuata Island

Nearby, the craft centre showcases the island’s renowned artistry, with beautifully detailed wood and bone carvings that exemplify the distinctive Marquesan style celebrated throughout French Polynesia.
