Sandspit - Moresby Camp: Land Tour & Embark

Your adventure begins in Sandspit (K’il Kun), British Columbia, the gateway to the enchanting islands of Haida Gwaii. After arriving the day before departure, enjoy an overnight stay arranged for you, with time to unwind before the journey ahead. The following morning, meet your guide and set off on a cultural land tour that offers your first introduction to the rich traditions of the Haida Nation.

Travel by ferry to Graham Island to visit the celebrated Haida Heritage Centre at Kay Llnagaay, where you’ll enjoy a guided tour that brings Haida art, language, and ancestral stories vividly to life. A traditional Haida lunch at Keenawaii’s Kitchen, hosted by a local family, offers a warm and personal connection to island culture. Afterward, stretch your legs on a forest walk at Spirit Lake before returning by ferry to Moresby Island.

From there, a scenic drive along a rugged logging road, often accompanied by sightings of black bears and Sitka deer, leads you to Moresby Camp, where your vessel awaits. Once aboard, meet your friendly crew, settle into your cabin, and take part in a short orientation and safety briefing before a delicious welcome dinner. That evening, anchor in a peaceful cove, ready to begin your exploration of the Gwaii Haanas at first light.

Gwaii Haanas & Historic Village Sites
3 - 9Days

Gwaii Haanas & Historic Village Sites

Over the coming days, immerse yourself in the timeless rhythm of Haida Gwaii, a place where ocean, forest, and culture are deeply entwined. The Haida people have lived on these islands for more than 12,000 years, and their stories are etched into every cedar and shoreline. Guided by the Haida Watchmen, guardians of their ancestral sites, you’ll visit ancient villages such as T’aanuu Llnagaay (Tanu), K’uuna Llnagaay (Skedans), and SGang Gwaay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Standing among towering monumental poles and moss-covered longhouse remains, the Watchmen bring these sacred places to life with knowledge passed down through generations.

Weather permitting, visit Hlk’yah GawGa (Windy Bay) on Lyell Island, where the Legacy Pole was raised in 2013 to commemorate the historic Gwaii Haanas Agreement, symbolising the enduring partnership between the Haida Nation and the Canadian government. You may also have the opportunity to experience the healing pools of G̱andll K’in Gwaay.yaay (Hotsprings Island), which have gradually returned since the 2012 earthquake.

Each day reveals the wild beauty of Gwaii Haanas, from pristine beaches and lush rainforests to the nutrient-rich waters of Burnaby Narrows, home to one of the densest intertidal ecosystems on Earth. Keep watch for humpback whales, porpoises, Steller sea lions, and a dazzling array of seabirds including eagles, auklets, guillemots, and even tufted puffins, all thriving in this rich coastal environment.

With the guidance of your onboard naturalist, you’ll explore sheltered inlets by kayak or small boat, learning to identify local species and perhaps helping to record them for the ship’s log. Each evening brings a new anchorage, a quiet bay surrounded by ancient forest and the perfect place to reflect on the connection between the land, the sea, and the people who have called these islands home since time immemorial.
