PNG Walindi Resort Experience - 8 Days

Step into the wild heart of Papua New Guinea with a week based on the shores of Kimbe Bay, where rainforest meets one of the most vibrant reef systems on the planet. There are some places that feel purpose-built for discovery, and Walindi Plantation Resort on New Britain is one of them. It offers a rare blend of warm hospitality, genuine connection to the local area, and front-row access to extraordinary nature.

Across seven nights, your days mix ocean and land adventures with time to simply absorb the setting. One moment you’re gliding over coral gardens in clear, calm water, and the next you’re stepping into rainforest alive with birdsong, following local trails toward steaming volcanic terrain. Walindi isn’t just a base to sleep, it’s a gateway into the wild rhythms of New Britain, shaped by generations who know these reefs, forests and communities intimately.

Enjoy snorkelling crystal-clear outer reefs, hiking into volcanic landscapes, soaking in a hidden thermal river, slipping into the island’s layered history on visits to atmospheric WWII plane wrecks, and ending the evening beneath a canopy of pulsing fireflies. For those who want to go deeper, scuba diving packages are also available on request.

With all meals included and a comfortable Plantation House Room to return to each night, this is an immersive escape that balances adventure with sunset drinks, poolside relaxation, and the simple luxury of waking up somewhere truly remote and alive.

Port Moresby to Hoskins
1Day

Port Moresby to Hoskins

Arrive independently into Port Moresby and connect with your included domestic flight to Hoskins. On arrival, you’ll be met for the transfer to Walindi Plantation Resort on the shores of Kimbe Bay. Settle into your Plantation House Room, meet the team, and ease into island time with your first tropical dinner.

Outer Reef Snorkelling
2Day

Outer Reef Snorkelling

After breakfast, head out by boat into Kimbe Bay’s warm, clear and typically calm waters, weaving between small rainforest-cloaked islands on your way to the outer reefs. With full snorkel gear provided, you’ll spend the morning exploring sites where the reef often rises close to the surface, making it perfect for long, unhurried drifts over coral gardens, bommies and colourful drop-offs. Many guests find the snorkelling here every bit as spectacular as the diving, thanks to the clarity, shallow reef structure and sheer density of life.

In the water, look for brilliant hard and soft corals sheltering a constant swirl of reef fish, plus crustaceans and invertebrates tucked into crevices and coral heads. On many reefs you may encounter resident schools of barracuda, tuna and jacks, and sharks are regularly seen on offshore sites. Keep an eye on the blue between locations too as pods of dolphins often escort the boats, and with luck you could spot bigger visitors passing through, such as pilot whales, whale sharks, and on rare occasions even orcas. Return to Walindi for lunch and a relaxed afternoon by the pool, on a kayak or paddleboard, or simply soaking up the bay views before dinner.

Volcano Hike
3Day

Volcano Hike

After an early breakfast, set off with local guides on a reasonably challenging trek to the rim of the active Garbuna volcano crater, one of New Britain’s most memorable inland adventures. Starting at the edge of the plantation, the trail winds into lush, pristine rainforest, where towering trees form a dense canopy and the forest floor is alive with detail. As you climb, keep watch for fascinating insects, birds and unusual plants, with your guides helping you spot the small things that are easy to miss.

After roughly three hours of ascent, the landscape shifts dramatically as you emerge into a more open, otherworldly zone of an exposed valley dotted with steaming vents, volcanic rubble and hot streams. It’s a powerful contrast to the rainforest below and offers a completely different perspective on the island’s wild geology. The descent follows the same route and typically takes 2–3 hours, with sections that can be steep and slippery, before you return to Walindi for a well-earned chill, a hearty dinner, and a quiet evening under the stars.

Garu Hot River Springs
4Day

Garu Hot River Springs

This morning is dedicated to deep relaxation with a half-day visit to the Garu Hot River Springs, a hidden thermal river threading through the West New Britain rainforest. Fed by a volcanic spring, the water runs a striking emerald green, forming swirling pools and small waterfalls in a beautifully secluded setting. The river is naturally mineral-rich and high in sulphur, and the temperature sits at around 43°C, making it ideal for a soothing soak after yesterday’s hike.

Take your time bathing in the warm pools beneath the rainforest canopy, and, if you’d like, try the natural red mud along the banks for a gentle, local-style exfoliation. Return to Walindi for lunch, then enjoy a free afternoon to unwind by the pool, take out a kayak or paddleboard, or simply sit back with bay views and a cool drink before dinner.

Snorkelling & Firefly Experience
5Day

Snorkelling & Firefly Experience

Head back out to the outer reefs for your second snorkelling excursion, offering another chance to explore new sites, drift over coral gardens and soak up Kimbe Bay’s colour and clarity. Return to the resort for a relaxed afternoon, then enjoy dinner before your memorable evening outing.

After dark, join a short guided walk to the firefly trees on the edge of the property. By day they look unremarkable, but at night they transform. Expect entire trees shimmering with thousands of tiny fireflies, flashing in synchronised, pulsing waves like a living constellation. It’s a simple, unforgettable experience offering a quiet rainforest stroll and a natural light show that feels almost otherworldly.

Birding Walk
6Day

Birding Walk

Rise early while the forest is at its most active and join a guided 2–3 hour birding walk in the rich habitats around Walindi. New Britain is a geological hotspot with a strong mix of endemic species, and the wider Bismarck Archipelago is a must for anyone interested in the region’s remarkable birdlife. Your guide will help you tune into calls, movement and canopy shapes as the rainforest wakes up, often the difference between simply walking through the jungle and truly seeing it.

Depending on conditions and luck, you may encounter sought-after local specialties such as Nicobar Pigeon, Blue-Eyed Cockatoo, New Britain Pitta, and a dazzling variety of pigeons, doves and kingfishers. Highlights sometimes include the Black-Headed Paradise Kingfisher. After the walk, return to the resort for a leisurely lunch and a free afternoon. Relax by the pool, take a kayak or paddleboard out on the bay, browse the boutique, or settle into the lounge with the reference library and a coffee.

WWII Plane Wrecks & Snorkelling
7Day

WWII Plane Wrecks & Snorkelling

This morning takes you into New Britain’s wartime past with a half-day WWII plane wrecks excursion. A short drive north of Walindi brings you to two remarkable relics hidden in the greenery. These are the abandoned New Zealand Lockheed Vega Ventura (4522 / PV-1) and an American B-25H Mitchell bomber. Both aircraft met their fate in 1944, with the B-25H being forced down after engine trouble, and the Ventura struck by a Japanese 25mm round during a strafing run, leaving them damaged beyond repair and eventually abandoned.

Now, the wrecks sit vine-draped and atmospheric, slowly being reclaimed by the forest. You’ll have time to walk around and, in places, climb through the fuselages, getting a close-up look at these haunting reminders of the Pacific theatre, often noted as among the last examples with original artillery outfitting still in place. Return to the resort for lunch, then head out later for your last outer reef snorkelling trip, a perfect contrast of history and reef life to round out your final full day in Kimbe Bay.
