Wild Antarctica - Weddell Sea Fly/Sail 13 days

Aboard: Sylvia Earle

Set off on a remarkable journey to the “ice factory” of the Weddell Sea and the dramatic western edge of the Antarctic Peninsula. To maximise time in Antarctica, you’ll avoid a full Drake Passage crossing by flying from Punta Arenas to King George Island in the South Shetlands, where you’ll board your ice-strengthened vessel purpose-built for comfortable polar exploration.

From there, venture into the Weddell Sea to witness immense ice shelves shedding colossal, table-top bergs. Cruising by Zodiac and stepping ashore whenever conditions allow, you’ll experience this remote region up close before continuing on to the Antarctic Peninsula for exhilarating landings and unforgettable excursions. As the ship threads its way around the peninsula, you’ll keep watch for whales, seals, and penguins, calling at iconic Antarctic sites along the way. Your voyage then concludes with a classic sail back across the Drake Passage to Ushuaia, offering an awe-inspiring expedition packed with wild scenery and once-in-a-lifetime moments!

Various departures available, including a 11 day variation. Please enquire for full rates and dates.

Punta Arenas
1Day

Punta Arenas

Your journey begins in Punta Arenas in Chile. Arrive independently and transfer to the hotel for your included overnight stay. Enjoy time seeing the sights of the city, before enjoying a good night’s sleep in preparation for the adventures ahead.

Punta Arenas to King George Island

Punta Arenas to King George Island

In the morning you will transfer to the airport for your charter flight to King George Island in Antarctica. Flying over the Drake Passage is momentous feeling as you watch civilisation disappear below you and anticipate landing in the white continent. Upon arrival at King George Island there may be time to explore the penguin and seal-rich waters of Fildes Bay and visit the surprising Trinity Church at Bellingshausen Station, before boarding your ship and settling in to your comfortable surroundings.

Weddell Sea & Antarctic Peninsula
3 - 10Days

Weddell Sea & Antarctic Peninsula

Now it’s time to experience eight unforgettable days immersed in a world of ice, mountains and wildlife. The first sight of an iceberg and the sheer freshness of the air are hard to put into words, and with 18–24 hours of daylight the days feel wonderfully expansive. We explore the western Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands, with time to be as active or as relaxed as you choose, always surrounded by vast white landscapes and an ocean scattered with ice.

Each day is planned in real time by the expedition team, drawing on deep local knowledge to choose the best landing sites and routes based on weather, sea-ice conditions and wildlife opportunities. Typically we aim for two excursions a day, combining Zodiac cruises with shore landings, gliding along ice cliffs, weaving between grounded icebergs, scanning for whales and seals, and watching penguins porpoise through the water. Ashore, you’ll stretch your legs on pebbled beaches and snowy slopes, visit penguin colonies and historic sites, and climb to viewpoints where jagged peaks tower above ice-speckled bays. Optional activities may be offered whenever conditions allow, and brave souls may have the chance to take a quick polar plunge.

If conditions are favourable, we will attempt to reach the Antarctic Sound and the Weddell Sea, a region steeped in Shackleton history and famous for its dense “iceberg alley” scenery. The rewards here can be extraordinary, from dramatic sea-ice landscapes to fossil reminders of a warmer prehistoric past, and wildlife encounters that can include Adélie, chinstrap and gentoo penguins alongside humpback, minke and even orca whales. Between outings, the ship itself is a front-row seat. The observation lounge, open decks and bridge offer uninterrupted views, while the creak and distant thunder of glaciers calving into the sea provides a soundtrack you won’t forget.

Drake Passage
11 - 12Days

Drake Passage

After your thrilling exploration of Antarctica it’s time to head back towards South America as your ship sails north through the famous Drake Passage. Keep an eye out in one of the many observation areas for the seabirds, including albatross, which follow the ship, and the last iceberg sightings. Enjoy informative lectures on the wildlife, history and geology of the areas you have discovered and enjoy sharing tales and photos with your fellow shipmates. Enjoy a fantastic farewell dinner on your last night onboard.

Ushuaia, Argentina
13Day

Ushuaia, Argentina

On the morning of day 13 you will awake to your ship gently cruising along the Beagle Channel into Ushuaia. After breakfast it will be time to say goodbye as you disembark and transfer to the airport or to a downtown location should you wish to extend your time in Ushuaia.

Now that I am back from my odyssey voyage, I thought I would let you know that after all that planning it really did exceed my expectations – we managed landings everywhere even on Tristan da Cuhna and had great bird sightings. The guides all knew what they were talking about too and made sure I got some great photos – still sorting them all out! Thanks for everything and see you at Birdfair!

Dr Lorna Mairs

Just a quick note to express my sincere thanks to you and all your staff for making this an epic adventure of immense proportions. Everything went smoothly, pickups, hotels and most of all the expedition itself. Truly a mind blowing experience unlike any I have ever taken.
