Anchorage to Homer, Alaska
1Day

Anchorage to Homer, Alaska

Your adventure begins with a private charter flight from Anchorage to Homer, a scenic fishing town set on the shores of Kachemak Bay near the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula. Known as “the end of the road”, Homer marks the most southerly point on Alaska’s connected highway system, with dramatic coastal views, working harbour life and the long gravel sweep of the Homer Spit stretching out into the bay.

Surrounded by protected habitat, Homer is also a rewarding introduction to Alaska’s wild character, with more than 100 bird species recorded in the area and moose often found nearby. This evening, after checking into the hotel, meet your Expedition Leader and fellow travellers for a welcome dinner and orientation, as anticipation builds for the bear photography experiences to come.

Kachemak Bay Cruise – Fly to Alaska Bear Camp

This morning, set out by private boat to explore the wildlife-rich waters of Kachemak Bay, where dramatic coastal scenery, shifting tides and abundant marine life offer superb photographic opportunities. Sea otters, seals and sea lions are often seen here, while Gull Island provides a memorable highlight, with thousands of nesting seabirds including puffins, guillemots, kittiwakes and murres.

After lunch, board a private bush plane for the flight across Cook Inlet to Nat Hab’s Alaska Bear Camp, timing the journey around the best possible weather window. On clear days, the views are extraordinary, with snow-clad volcanoes, glaciers and icefields unfolding below before you descend towards the wild coast of Lake Clark National Park. Set within one of the world’s great brown bear habitats, this remote fly-in camp lies on a rare private inholding, surrounded by roadless wilderness, and is accessible only by air or boat.

On arrival, receive a full orientation and safety briefing before heading out with expert naturalist Expedition Leaders for your first bear-viewing experience. Thanks to the area’s rich seasonal food sources, from spring sedges and beach clams to late-summer salmon runs, bears are often seen foraging close by and can sometimes be photographed from remarkably intimate distances under careful guidance. With viewing platforms, safe camp boundaries and bears frequently visible from camp itself, this is an exceptional setting for immersive brown bear photography. In the evening, settle into your cabin and enjoy a freshly prepared dinner in the dining tent, with local Alaskan ingredients adding to the sense of place.
