Nepal & Bhutan Photo Expedition

This immersive photo expedition brings together two of the Himalayas’ most captivating kingdoms, combining Nepal’s vibrant cultural heritage and lowland wildlife with Bhutan’s mountain landscapes, sacred valleys and deeply preserved Buddhist traditions. Designed specifically for photographers, the journey offers an unusually varied range of subjects, from the temples and artisan quarters of the Kathmandu Valley to the subtropical forests of Chitwan National Park, where one-horned rhinos, crocodiles, gharial, birdlife and the elusive signs of tiger presence provide thrilling wildlife opportunities.

Photograph the chortens of Dochula Pass, the riverside grandeur of Punakha Dzong, the wetlands of Gangtey Valley, black-necked cranes, traditional archery and the iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery clinging to its cliff high above Paro. With a small group of just 9 guests, expert photo leadership, hands-on instruction and time built in for thoughtful composition, this is a richly layered journey through nature, culture and Himalayan light.

Kathmandu, Nepal

Arrive independently to Kathmandu, Nepal’s atmospheric capital and a city long shaped by the artistic and spiritual traditions of both Hinduism and Buddhism. Set against the distant drama of the Himalayas, Kathmandu is a compelling introduction to the region, where ancient temples, carved wooden facades and lively public squares offer a rich sense of place from the very beginning.

After being met at the airport, transfer to your hotel, with many Kathmandu journeys made by electric vehicle. Your base is Dwarika’s, a beautiful heritage property inspired by the palaces of Nepal’s Newar kings and filled with historic architectural details and artefacts. This evening, meet your Expedition Leader and fellow travellers over a welcome dinner, with an introduction to the photographic journey ahead.

Accommodation: 2 nights at Dwarika's Hotel

Dhulikhel - Himalaya Photography / Bhaktapur
2Day

Dhulikhel - Himalaya Photography / Bhaktapur

This morning we will set out early for Dhulikhel, a traditional Newari village in the foothills east of Kathmandu, where the Himalayas rise in a spectacular serrated skyline. In clear conditions, more than 20 peaks can be seen across the horizon, including Annapurna and Lhotse, creating superb opportunities for wide mountain panoramas and studies of shifting light as the morning unfolds.

After lunch with views toward the mountains, continue to Bhaktapur, one of the Kathmandu Valley’s three ancient city-states and part of its UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its beautifully preserved temples, courtyards and former royal palace complex give the impression of an open-air museum, yet daily life continues all around. As you explore Durbar Square and the surrounding lanes, photograph intricate woodcarving, Thangka painters, terracotta potters, traditional masks and handloomed textiles before returning to Kathmandu for the night.

Fly to Bharatpur / Chitwan National Park

Fly to Bharatpur / Chitwan National Park

Today we leave the bustle of Kathmandu behind and fly south to Bharatpur, gateway to the lowland Terai plains. On arrival, transfer to Meghauli Serai, your luxury ecolodge for the next three nights, beautifully positioned beside the Rapti River on the edge of Chitwan National Park.

Time for a very different photographic adventure, as the focus shifts from temples and mountain views to Nepal’s rich subtropical wilderness. This is one of the finest locations in the Chitwan region for wildlife photography, with excellent chances to photograph one-horned rhinoceros, crocodile and gharial, along with the remote possibility of glimpsing the elusive Bengal tiger.

Accommodation: 3 nights at Meghauli Serai

Photo Safaris in Chitwan National Park
4 - 5Days

Photo Safaris in Chitwan National Park

Over the next two days, we head deep into Chitwan National Park on a series of 4x4 photo safaris through Nepal’s subtropical lowlands. Established in 1973 as the country’s first national park, Chitwan is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and protects a remarkable mosaic of forest, grassland and river habitat rich in wildlife.

With your Photography Expedition Leader on hand to help position you for the best light and angles, there is time to focus on Chitwan’s most compelling subjects. Sightings are never guaranteed, but the park offers excellent chances to photograph one-horned rhinoceros, Asian elephant, crocodile, deer, monkeys and colourful birdlife, along with possible encounters with leopard, sloth bear and wild boar. Weather permitting, sunrise and sunset outings make the most of the softest light, while optional river safaris and time spent tracking tiger signs with a local guide add an extra sense of adventure to these days in the wild.

Bharatpur to Kathmandu
6Day

Bharatpur to Kathmandu

This morning, we return to Bharatpur airport and fly back to Kathmandu, shifting from the wild landscapes of Chitwan to the intricate cultural heritage of the Kathmandu Valley. After settling back into the capital, continue to nearby Patan, one of the valley’s great historic cities and part of its wider UNESCO World Heritage landscape.

This afternoon, explore Patan Durbar Square on a guided tour, photographing a rich collection of palace buildings, artistic courtyards, pagoda temples and shrines. Known for its exceptional artisans, Patan retains a wonderful sense of historic character, with narrow streets, brick houses, Hindu temples and Buddhist monasteries reflecting centuries of cultural harmony. It is an especially rewarding place for architectural detail, street scenes and atmospheric images of Newari craftsmanship. In the evening you will return to your Kathmandu hotel for the night.

This morning we fly to Bhutan, the enchanting “Land of the Thunder Dragon”, with the chance to see the Himalayas unfolding below in a dramatic white spine if the skies are clear. Arriving into the green Paro Valley is a spectacular introduction to the kingdom. From here we will continue by road to Thimphu, Bhutan’s mountain-ringed capital and a fascinating blend of traditional culture and gentle modern life.

As we travel towards Thimphu, pause to photograph the historic Iron Bridge of Tachogang Lhakhang, built some 600 years ago by the legendary bridge builder Thangtong Gyalpo. Later this afternoon, visit Thimphu Dzong, a striking monastery-fortress whose whitewashed walls, golden roofs and riverside setting make it one of the capital’s most impressive photographic subjects. Its role as both a religious site and seat of government offers a compelling insight into Bhutan’s deep connection between spiritual and civic life.

Dochula Pass / Lamperi Royal Botanical Park / Punakha Dzong

Early this morning we set off for Punakha, pausing at Dochula Pass, where 108 chortens, bright prayer flags and sweeping Himalayan views create one of Bhutan’s most memorable photographic settings. Weather permitting, continue on foot from the summit towards Lamperi Royal Botanical Park, following a gentle forest trail through oak, rhododendron and hemlock. The park offers rewarding opportunities for bird photography throughout the year, with spring bringing vivid rhododendron blooms and the occasional chance to spot musk deer in the misty woodland.

Descending into Punakha, check in and enjoy lunch at our luxurious accommodation, Punakha River Lodge, before walking through rice paddies, pastures and terraced fields to Chimi Lhakhang Temple, a small shrine dedicated to Bhutan’s much-loved “Divine Madman”, Lama Drukpa Kunley. Later this afternoon, visit magnificent Punakha Dzong, the “Palace of Great Happiness”, set at the confluence of the Po and Mo rivers. Reached by a picturesque wooden footbridge, this grand monastery-fortress is one of Bhutan’s most beautiful architectural subjects, with whitewashed walls, carved woodwork, maroon-robed monks and a spectacular riverside setting.

Punakha Hike / Jigme Dorji N.P

Today we enjoy a slower start before setting out on foot to Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten, a beautiful three-storey temple built high on a ridge above the Punakha Valley. Dedicated to the wellbeing of the kingdom, its people and all sentient beings, the chorten offers wonderful opportunities for landscape photography, with sweeping views over the valley, river and surrounding hills.

Afterwards, continue to Jigme Dorji National Park for a picnic lunch and an afternoon immersed in one of Bhutan’s most important protected landscapes. Accompanied by a local naturalist and conservationist, explore forest trails through a remarkable range of habitats, looking for wildlife and birdlife to photograph. Species such as Himalayan monal, blood pheasant and satyr tragopan may be seen among many others, making this a particularly rewarding day for nature and bird photography before returning to your peaceful riverside lodge for dinner.

Gangtey Valley
10 - 11Days

Gangtey Valley

We now cross a high pass into the broad glacial landscapes of the Gangtey Valley, also known as Phobjikha, one of Bhutan’s most beautiful and biodiverse regions. Over the next two days, there is time to slow down and photograph its sweeping wetlands, forested hills and quiet rural scenes, with the valley’s sacred atmosphere adding a powerful sense of place.

A highlight is a visit to the Black-Necked Crane Information Centre, where spotting scopes help us search for these elegant alpine cranes, which migrate here each autumn from the Tibetan Plateau. Revered in Bhutanese culture and celebrated in folk songs, the cranes are a striking photographic subject with their red crowns, black necks and wide wingspans. We also visit Gangtey Goemba Monastery, a magnificent 17th-century Buddhist site set above the valley, where monastery architecture, village life and panoramic views combine for some of the journey’s most evocative cultural images.

Accommodation: 2 nights at Gangtey Lodge

Paro Valley - Archery Lesson
12Day

Paro Valley - Archery Lesson

Today we journey back to Paro, travelling through the mountainous landscapes of northwest Bhutan to return to one of the kingdom’s most beautiful and culturally rich valleys. Surrounded by forested hills, traditional farmhouses and distant peaks, Paro is steeped in myth and legend, offering a peaceful change of pace after our time in Gangtey.

This afternoon, visit a local farmhouse for an introduction to Bhutan’s national sport with a traditional archery lesson. Once rooted in martial skill, archery is now enjoyed across the country as a test of focus, precision and camaraderie, with lively competitions often held during festivals and public holidays. It is a wonderful chance to photograph a different side of Bhutanese life, capturing movement, expression and cultural tradition in an informal village setting

Accommodation: 2 nights at COMO Uma Paro

Tiger's Nest Monastery
13Day

Tiger's Nest Monastery

Our last full day is likely to be a highlight, as this morning we set out for one of Bhutan’s most iconic sights, the extraordinary Taktsang Monastery, better known as the Tiger’s Nest. Clinging to a sheer cliff face nearly 3,000 feet above the Paro Valley, this 17th-century temple complex is one of the Himalayas’ most unforgettable photographic subjects, combining dramatic architecture, spiritual legend and breathtaking mountain scenery.

As we hike towards a viewpoint opposite the monastery, pause to capture the classic perspective of the temples suspended above the valley. Those who continue on the full, more challenging climb are rewarded with even more exceptional compositions, from close architectural details to sweeping views of the surrounding peaks and forests. Afterwards, there may be time for some last-minute shopping before bidding farewell to Bhutan.

Paro to Bangkok - End of Tour
