Zimbabwe is one of the best countries in the world to see Africa’s big 5, lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and water buffalo. However, there are also, in profusion, many other species of mammals to be found in the national parks, including hippopotamus, primates, zebra, giraffe, antelopes and their predators such as jackals and hyenas.
There are 685 species of birds recorded as resident in Zimbabwe, including 19 on the world endangered list. These include the grey crowned crane, Ludwig’s bustard, white winged flufftail and three species of vulture. A massive variety of birds can be seen throughout the country’s national parks, many year-round. The national emblem, the Zimbabwe Bird is probably a bateleur or fish eagle.
The majority of the population of Zimbabwe are from the Shona and Ndebele tribal groups, each of which has a rich and vibrant culture evident in music, dancing and art. The country also has ancient historical associations, including primitive cave art as well as 12th and 13th century ruins reflecting a period when Greater Zimbabwe was a major regional power.
