Nepal
From soaring peaks to wildlife-rich jungles and ancient cities, discover a land of extraordinary adventure, culture and natural beauty.
About Nepal
Welcome to a land of outstanding contrasts, where some of the highest mountains on Earth rise above ancient cities, forested valleys, rushing rivers and wildlife-rich subtropical plains. For adventure travellers, few destinations offer such variety within one journey. Explore the temples, stupas and historic squares of the Kathmandu Valley, admire the snow-covered Himalayas from Pokhara, or venture into the mountains on foot, following centuries-old trails between traditional villages and spectacular viewpoints.
In the southern lowlands, the landscapes change dramatically as the Himalayan foothills give way to the forests and grasslands of Chitwan National Park. Here, wildlife takes centre stage, with opportunities to search for greater one-horned rhinoceros, Bengal tigers, and an exceptional variety of birdlife, while the park’s rivers are home to gharial and mugger crocodiles. Jeep safaris, guided walks, canoe journeys and time spent discovering the culture of local communities reveal an entirely different side of Nepal.
Further north, Pokhara provides a gateway to the Annapurna region, where some of Nepal’s most rewarding trekking experiences unfold among terraced hillsides, rhododendron forests and traditional mountain communities. Walk between villages such as Ghandruk, Majhgaon and Dhampus with the Annapurna range forming a magnificent backdrop, or combine time in the mountains with white-water rafting through the river valleys around Damauli and Saranghat. From gentle foothill hikes to more challenging adventures, this is a region that allows travellers to experience the Himalayas at their own pace.
For an even greater Himalayan adventure, journey into the Khumbu and Everest region, travelling via Lukla and following legendary mountain trails through Monjo, Namche, Tashinga and Pangboche. Much of this spectacular landscape lies within UNESCO-listed Sagarmatha National Park, a world of deep valleys, glaciers and towering peaks dominated by Mount Everest itself, alongside the living culture of the region’s Sherpa communities. Nepal can also form part of a wider Himalayan journey extending into Bhutan, India and Tibet, bringing together remarkable landscapes, ancient Buddhist heritage and some of the world’s most memorable mountain experiences.
Helping you build your perfect holiday
Geography of Nepal
Stretching between India and the high Himalayas, Nepal encompasses an extraordinary range of landscapes within a relatively compact country. In the south, the Terai forms a belt of fertile lowlands, grasslands, forests and wetlands, home to wildlife-rich areas such as Chitwan and Bardia National Parks. Farther north, the land rises through river valleys and forested middle hills, where the Kathmandu Valley sits among ancient settlements and Pokhara lies beneath the great Annapurna range.

For travellers from the UK, Nepal is most easily reached by flying into Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, the country’s principal international gateway. There are currently no direct flights from the UK, but convenient one-stop connections are available from London and several regional airports, including Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh.

Although relatively compact, getting around Nepal can be an adventure in itself, with journeys combining private road transfers, domestic flights, trekking and, in the more remote mountain regions, helicopter transfers. For most visitors, the best way to explore is as part of a guided tailor-made holiday or carefully planned small-group tour. Nepal’s mountainous terrain, changeable weather and varied transport connections mean that having experienced local guides and ground teams takes much of the uncertainty out of travelling between regions. What’s more, on many of Nepal’s established Himalayan trekking routes, licensed trekking guides are actually a mandatory requirement.

Adding to its ability to entice travellers from all over the world, Nepal is a year-round destination. However, depending on your main reason for visiting this remarkable country, there may be particular seasons and months which may offer you more from your experience. If it’s hiking you’re after, then autumn and spring are generally the best seasons for trekking and Himalayan adventures. From September to November, clearer skies and excellent mountain visibility make this a favourite time for walking in regions such as Everest, Annapurna and Langtang.
