Our popularitinerary Suggestions

All our itinerary holidays are fully customisable

Tromsø - Embark
1Day

Tromsø - Embark

Your Arctic Norway Northern Lights expedition begins in historic Tromsø, 250 miles north of the Polar Circle. After arriving independently, make your way to the port to board your ship and prepare for adventure as we set sail into the wilderness.

Known as the ‘Gateway to the Arctic’, Tromsø is a delight to explore in itself and you may wish to arrive here a couple of days before your trip to experience some of what this unique city has to offer, including the Polar Museum, where you’ll learn about the city’s exploration heritage, and striking Arctic Cathedral. A number of pre-cruise programmes are available, please enquire for full details.

Exploring Lyngen Fjord and Alps
2Day

Exploring Lyngen Fjord and Alps

Over the course of the next 7 days we will explore expedition style through four distinct regions, with no set itinerary, just a sense of adventure. The route shown in this itinerary is likely to change owing to weather and sea conditions, and Northern Lights possibilities, with your experienced captain and crew charting a course each day to bring you the best experiences possible.

Your likely first area for exploration is the incredibly scenic Lyngen area, where we can immerse ourselves in the beauty of a landscape encompassing very impressive jagged, snowy mountains. Along the over 100 mile Lyngen Fjord, the possibilities for winter activities are endless, and we will hope to enjoy landings, snowshoe walks, hikes and kayaking here if conditions allow.

After an exciting day of adventures, in the evening it will be time for a real treat as we gather around a bonfire on the beach to enjoy drinks and delicious Norwegian foods cooked by our onboard chefs. As we relax among these incredible natural surroundings, we will hope that the skies will offer up another treat as we wait for an appearance from the famous Northern Lights.

Senja
3Day

Senja

We now plan to make our way to Senja, Norway’s second-largest island. This beautiful area, often called Norway-in-miniature, is characterised by sandy beaches, jagged mountains, deep forests and is dotted with picturesque fishing villages.

During your time here, you will visit a local community to experience the famously warm Scandinavian hospitality, learn about the Sámi culture and get an insight into what life is like for the inhabitants of these remote villages in the winter months. As we explore and sail through the day, dark and at dusk, enjoy the glittering snowscapes illuminated by the low sun and the starlight, and keep your eye out for sightings of the free-roaming reindeer as they wander around the island.

Towards Lofoten
4Day

Towards Lofoten

As we make our way towards the Lofoten Islands, we can enjoy a day of flexible expedition sailing, with your team seeking out the ideal places for landings and adventures. There should hopefully be opportunities for kayaking excursions and small boat explorations around the remote islands.

You will want to be on deck, camera in hand, as we approach the dramatically steep mountains of Lofoten. Watching these imposing landscapes of windswept islands, sheltered bays, and some of the most beautiful fjords in the world come into view is truly an experience you won’t forget in a hurry.

The Lofoten Islands
5Day

The Lofoten Islands

It’s time to enjoy one of nature’s most impressive splendours, the magical Lofoten Islands in winter. A snow-capped wonderland of narrow fjords and charming fishing villages hidden between towering mountains, this region is simply a delight to witness and explore. The plan is to land close to Svolvær, where we will anchor overnight, to enjoy a relaxing day of exploration in this small but special town. Take a fishing trip from here, relax in a traditional Nordic sauna before taking a thrilling polar plunge, or simply enjoy the cosy restaurants and bars of this unique settlement.

Vesterålen
6Day

Vesterålen

Our final area for exploration is the magical snow-capped area of Vesterålen which we will reach following an unforgettable sail through the narrow Trollfjord and into the Raftsund strait, surrounded by towering cliffs on all sides that appear so close you will feel like you could almost touch them.

Vesterålen is an ideal area for expedition activities, and we will hope to be able to enjoy multiple activities here including kayaking, small boat cruising and snowshoe hiking across the icy landscapes. Another memorable treat awaits this evening as we are granted exclusive access to the fantastic Hurtigruten Museum where you can enjoy a walk around followed by dinner served in this special heritage setting.

Back Towards Tromsø
7Day

Back Towards Tromsø

Our last day at sea will be spent sheltered in the deep fjords sailing back towards Tromsø, enjoying some more memorable adventures along the way. With a new island or mountain at every turn, there will be plenty of opportunities for landings and activities, with your experienced expedition team assessing the best spots to make a stop at. You will also want to spend some time on deck soaking up the incredible vistas of the winter sun illuminating the landscapes and mountains, and this portion of the journey also offers up the best chances of spotting whales in the frigid waters below.

Tromsø - Disembark
8Day

Tromsø - Disembark

Your Norway Northern Lights Expedition Cruise concludes back in Tromsø where it will sadly be time to disembark to make your way homewards or onwards. Multiple post-cruise programmes are available offering further exploration of this area. Please enquire for full details.
