Maun to Xakanaxa (Moremi)
1Day

Maun to Xakanaxa (Moremi)

On arrival into Maun, you will connect with your Mack Air charter flight to Xakanaxa in the Moremi Game Reserve, where your guide will meet you and transfer you into camp. From here, your safari begins in earnest, with the first three nights spent exploring the Xakanaxa region on shared morning and afternoon game drives through a wonderfully varied mosaic of floodplains, mopane woodland and permanent channels.

Even the flight into Moremi can offer a memorable introduction to the Delta, with elephant, buffalo, lechwe and hippo often visible from the air before you begin searching for smaller species on the ground. This is also an exciting introduction to the birdlife of the area, with a strong chance of seeing a variety of raptors, several hornbill species and an impressive selection of cuckoos, whydahs and honeyguides as you settle into this productive and beautiful corner of the reserve.

Moremi
2 - 3Days

Moremi

Over the next two days, you will explore the Xakanaxa region on morning and afternoon game drives, with plenty of time to enjoy both the wildlife and the photographic opportunities that make Moremi so special. Lying on the eastern edge of the Okavango Delta, this is an area of remarkable ecological variety, where open floodplains, marshes, lagoons, papyrus-lined channels, grasslands, woodland and savannah combine to create one of the most rewarding safari settings in Botswana.

This diversity of habitat supports an exceptional concentration of wildlife, and Moremi is particularly well known as one of Africa’s finest places to see endangered African wild dogs. The resident buffalo herds are often shadowed by lion, while elephant move between the mopane forests and the Delta’s freshwater channels, and red lechwe are a characteristic presence in the wetlands. Birdlife is equally rich, with the swampy areas and open water attracting a superb variety of specials including rails, coucals, crakes, cisticolas, skimmers, storks, herons, African Fish Eagle, Slaty Egret and Wattled Crane.

Each evening return to the comfort of your safari tent to enjoy hearty meals and stories around the campfire.

Xakanaxa to Mababe
4Day

Xakanaxa to Mababe

After an early breakfast, you will leave the Xakanaxa region behind and begin a slow, game-viewing journey northeast through Moremi Game Reserve toward the Khwai and Mababe areas. This is a moving day rich in both scenery and wildlife, as you follow the course of the Manuchira Channel, known in its eastern stretches as the Khwai River. The track winds its way between lush riverside floodplains and mopane woodland, offering an ever-changing backdrop to the day's exploration. Along the way, your guide will pause at the striking Dombo Hippo Pools, where you can take in the stillness of the water interrupted only by the grunts and splashes of the resident hippo pods.

Later, you’ll take to the water for a tranquil mokoro excursion through the quieter backwaters of the Khwai and Mbudi channels, offering a peaceful perspective of the Delta.

This area is rich in wildlife, with elephants, both breeding herds and impressive old bulls, frequenting the riverbanks. Big cats such as lion, leopard, and cheetah may also be spotted, and you remain within the territories of two wild dog packs. Birding along this route is equally rewarding. Raptors patrol the skies and woodlands, including African Hawk-Eagle, Tawny Eagle, and the agile Shikra. In the mopane canopy, mixed flocks move noisily through the trees, bringing flashes of colour from Red-headed Weavers and the iridescent throats of Scarlet-chested Sunbirds. On the wetter fringes of the floodplain, the calls of Rosy-throated Longclaws and African Crakes echo through the grasses, while sharp-eyed guests may spot the shy Black Coucal or a Long-legged Bustard stepping purposefully across the open ground.

Arrive at our next camp in the late afternoon and settle in along the banks of the Khwai River in the Mababe Private Reserve.

Mababe Concession / Khwai River
5 - 6Days

Mababe Concession / Khwai River

Over the next two days, you will explore the Mababe Concession and the Khwai River on a combination of day and night game drives, taking full advantage of this private wilderness area where off-reserve activities are permitted. With exclusive camping and very limited vehicle numbers in the concession, this is a wonderfully uncrowded setting in which to enjoy the riverbanks, open savannah, mopane woodland and drier Kalahari habitats to the east. There will also be time for mokoro excursions in the quieter channels and, conditions permitting, guided walking safaris, adding a more intimate perspective on the landscape and its smaller details.

Mababe is a particularly rewarding area for photography, with your guide on hand to offer photography tuition as you explore. Elephant are a constant presence here, alongside a good variety of antelope and the chance of predators such as lion, leopard and serval, while night drives may reveal species seldom encountered during daylight hours. The birdlife is equally impressive, from bustards and longclaws in the open country to jacanas, crakes and gallinules in the waterways, making this a rich and varied stage of the safari both for wildlife viewing and for photographic opportunities.

Mababe to Central Chobe
7Day

Mababe to Central Chobe

Today, you will journey further north towards Chobe National Park, travelling through an ever-changing landscape as you make your way into the Central Chobe region. This is a long but fascinating game drive, with the route revealing striking evidence of the ancient Paleo-Lake Makgadikgadi, from the sandy Magwikwe ridge to the vast Mababe Depression. On arrival, you will settle into your exclusive wilderness campsite, where the next three nights will be spent exploring this remote and desert-like corner of Chobe on expertly guided game drives with plenty of time to focus on photography.

Because the day covers such a wide range of habitats, wildlife encounters can be wonderfully varied, with the chance of seeing elephant throughout the journey as well as lion and cheetah in particularly productive areas. The Mababe Depression is also outstanding for birdlife, especially after the rains, when the rich grasses attract an array of seed-eating species and the raptors that hunt them. For photographers, this moving day offers a rewarding mix of landscapes, wildlife and birdlife, making the journey to Central Chobe every bit as memorable as the destination itself.

Central Chobe
8 - 9Days

Central Chobe

Over the next two days, you will explore the Central Chobe region on game drives through one of Botswana’s most dramatic and varied safari landscapes. Unlike much of the country, this area is punctuated by rocky volcanic outcrops that rise above the Kalahari sands, creating a striking backdrop to the open plains and dry channels of Savuti. Alongside time spent searching for wildlife, you will also enjoy Bushman painting walks and photography, adding both cultural interest and creative focus to your time in this remarkable part of Chobe.

Central Chobe is famed for its powerful predator dynamics, and these days offer the chance to witness some of the area’s most compelling wildlife encounters, particularly the famous interaction between lion and elephant for which Savuti is known. Cheetah, hyaena and, in season, even wild dog may also be seen, while the marsh and waterholes attract a rich variety of birdlife, from sandgrouse and doves to raptors, korhaans, plovers and kestrels. With its open terrain, dramatic scenery and exceptional concentration of wildlife, this is a superb place to continue building your photographic portfolio.

Central Chobe - Chobe River - Kasane
10Day

Central Chobe - Chobe River - Kasane

On your final day, you will leave Central Chobe early and make your way towards Kasane, travelling through a beautiful range of northern Botswana habitats before reaching the Chobe River. After a picnic lunch, your safari concludes in memorable style with an afternoon boat cruise, offering a final chance to enjoy the region’s wildlife from the water.

The journey today will be rich in wildlife and birdlife, passing through wild and unfenced country where animals still move freely between habitats. Along the way, there may be opportunities to see buffalo, zebra, kudu and elephant, while the teak woodlands provide prime habitat for roan and sable antelope. Birders will find plenty to enjoy too, particularly in the canopy-rich woodlands, where colourful mixed bird parties and several notable raptors can make this final drive a rewarding conclusion to the safari.

As this final day will be a long day of adventures, an overnight stay tonight in Kasane, Livingstone or Victoria Falls is highly recommended.
