Egilsstaðir to Borgarfjörður

Having arrived independently to Egilsstaðir airport, you will transfer to Borgarfjörður and the local guest house, and settle into your comfortable and welcoming home for the next 5 nights, before meeting your CEO for a briefing on the adventures that lie ahead. This morning you can enjoy a leisurely walk around the scenic village of Borgarfjörður eystri before enjoying lunch at a local fish soup restaurant. The area here is renowned for its hospitality and friendly people, and will offer the perfect introduction to life in Iceland. As your base for the next 5 nights, you will soon learn all about the folklore here that says the area is said to hold a large population of elves!

In the afternoon you will take your first of many hikes as you trek through Borgarfjörður valley, following sheep trails up to Dimmidalur (the Dark Valley) at the base of the Door Mountains. As you hike through the spectacularly rugged landscapes, be sure to keep an eye out for the elves!

5 nights’ accommodation at a local guest house with breakfasts, lunches and dinners included.

Stórurð - Full Day Trek

After breakfast this morning you will hop in the minibus for a drive to Vatnskarð pass to enjoy a full day of hiking. Trekking up and over gravel, scree and boulders, you will firstly hike up to Geldingafjall mountain where you will be rewarded with incredible views over Njarðvík, Fljótsdalshérað valley, Héraðsflói bay and beyond. You will then trek down into Stórurð past enormous boulders and turquoise-coloured pools of icy cold water. After spending some time here soaking up the beautiful landscapes of this hidden gem, you can choose to either take a strenuous hike along the Dyrfjöll (Door Mountains), or take an easier route down into the valley below Rjúpnafell peak.

Dettifoss, Leirhnjúkur, Hverir & Myvatn

Dettifoss, Leirhnjúkur, Hverir & Myvatn

Today will see you discover some of Iceland’s most impressive sites as you set off early from the guesthouse and head towards the stunning sites around Mývatn lake. Later, you will head on to the fascinating Hverir geothermal area to see this geothermal wonder of bubbling mud pools and smoking, steamy hot springs. You will then visit the Myvatn Geothermal Lake which was formed during a volcanic eruption 2,300 yrs ago and offers unforgettable scenery and the chance for some birdwatching. After lunch in a local restaurant you can enjoy some free time here including the chance to visit the geothermal nature bath.

Another day of exploration on foot today begins in Afrétt where you will take an enjoyable hike across the moors through Urðarhólavatn, Gæsavötn and Víknaheiði, before continuing on to the golden sand beaches and high cliffs of the Breiðavík inlet. Here you can enjoy lunch and a spot of birdwatching before taking a hike to 479 m at Gagnheiði ridge which will reward in stunning views over the pastel colours of the rhyolite mountains.

Borgarfjörður & Egilsstaðir
5 - 6Days

Borgarfjörður & Egilsstaðir

Your final day of adventure will start at Borgarfjörður harbour where you can enjoy a walk around to see the Atlantic puffins and seabirds that nest here in large numbers, before enjoying a hike around the Brúnavík area. Having hiked over Hofstrandarskarð pass at 321 m, and alongside the colourful Helgárgil canyon, you will return to the guesthouse for your final meal with your new-found friends.

The following morning you can enjoy a visit to the picturesque fishing village of Seyðisfjörður which is idyllically situated under Mt. Strandartindur and Mt. Bjolfur, before transferring back to Egilsstaðir airport, with a stop at a local waterfall along the way.
