5 reasons to go island hopping on the Galapagos Islands

So sure enough, here are five reasons why island hopping on the Galapagos is the best way to spend your next overseas break.

1. Following in the footsteps of Darwin

Charles Darwin’s 1835 visit to these islands aboard the Beagle proved an extremely momentous one, the celebrated naturalist and geologist carrying out studies on the locality’s vast number of endemic species that were instrumental to the inception of his theory of evolution by natural selection.

Darwin was staggered at the wildlife’s lack of fear of humans, as you can still experience firsthand today and learn about at the Darwin Centre on the main island of Santa Cruz.

2. Astonishing photography opportunities

Such an incredible diversity of wildlife and natural scenery, together with amazingly clear air, also lends itself well to photography, the un-intimidated birds and mammals being happy to remain in close proximity to your camera.

It isn’t just on land where the photography opportunities for those island hopping on the Galapagos are highly rewarding, with the same applying for underwater photography when diving or snorkelling – so remember to pack that waterproof camera!

3. A consistently warm climate

You certainly won’t get cold on the Galapagos Islands, as you’d expect this close to the Equator – but don’t prepare for dull cloudless skies either! The different sea currents, notably the Humboldt, exert their influence, bringing cold water from the Antarctic along with frequent drizzles.

The islands’ rainy season is from July to December, although whenever you come, you can expect to be greeted by lots of sun.

4. A rich history to explore

Not for no reason were the islands inscribed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978. Nor is their past merely all about nature and Darwin – the first recorded visit having occurred way earlier, in 1535.

That occasion was a chance visit by the Bishop of Panama who had actually been aiming for Peru, but what he learned about the islands and reported back on his return to the Spanish Empire inspired the earliest formal explorations.
